Navigating the Depths of Grief: Understanding Its Impact and Pathways to Healing

Grief is an intensely personal and multifaceted journey, universally understood as a natural response to loss. It affects us deeply, influencing every aspect of our being—physically, mentally, and emotionally. This blog seeks to explore the intricacies of grief, with a focus on the prolonged and intense form known as complex grief. Here, we provide compassionate insights to help manage and transform this challenging experience.

Many individuals I’ve coached have found that grief acted as a trigger, keeping them anchored in the past. Through this work, key learnings have emerged that can help us understand why grief is uniquely challenging and non-linear. Accessing the right tools, groups, and resources can shift us from merely surviving to finding meaning in life after loss.

Grief is more than emotional pain; it disrupts personal, social, and economic aspects of life. It encompasses a spectrum of emotions, from sadness and yearning to anger and regret, reflecting the depth of the relationship lost.

Fully engaging with grief is essential for emotional healing. By allowing ourselves to experience grief, we honor our feelings and the significance of our loss. This process is crucial for adaptation and rebuilding our lives after loss.

Losing a loved one is a highly stressful experience and is the catalyst for our biological stress pathways to be activated to help us navigate through. Other stresses can occur with finance, loss, trauma because of the grief that adds extra layers to it.

Research into grief has shown that the bereaved are more likely to have higher rates of morbidity and mortality. From a logical and science lens that makes sense as the nervous system is pushed into emotional overload, running in a survival state and influencing your immune, endocrine and cardiac systems.

For the person grieving though they are not aware that the consequence of grief hijacking their system. The heart ache and loss is felt systemically and while is a normal part of the human experience, when we can shift the physiological response we can slowly sit with grief a little easier and bring compassion to the experience.

Research has suggested that between 7-10% of bereaved adults will experience persistent symptoms of prolonged grief (Szuhany et al., 2021). There are a few risk factors for developing prolonged grief like depression and bipolar but they still don’t know why some will develop it. If the loss is sudden, traumatic, is the loss of your child you are also at a higher risk.

Your sleep is also impacted with 80% of people that have long term grief have long term sleep issues(Szuhany et al., 2021), Recognizing and understanding this form of grief is crucial, especially for those who find themselves trapped in its grasp beyond the typical mourning period.

Physiological Stress Responses: Losing a loved one triggers our biological stress pathways, activating the fight, flight, or freeze responses. This activation can lead to sleep disturbances, changes in appetite, fatigue, and other physical symptoms. Over time, these stress responses can suppress the immune system and affect the endocrine and cardiac systems, explaining why the bereaved may experience higher rates of morbidity and mortality.

Emotional and Cognitive Overload: The emotional toll of grief can hyperactivate the amygdala, leading to difficulty in regulating emotions. This manifests as mood swings or profound sadness. Additionally, grief impacts the prefrontal cortex, impairing decision-making, concentration, and memory functions.

Complex grief, also known as complicated grief or prolonged grief disorder, persists longer than typical grief reactions, typically defined as extending beyond six months. It significantly impairs one’s ability to function normally and can include symptoms such as intense sorrow, difficulty accepting the death, numbness, and a profound sense of meaninglessness without the deceased.

The symptoms of complex grief include but are not limited to:

  • Persistent and intense sorrow and preoccupation with the deceased or the circumstances of the loss.
  • Severe emotional pain, including pining and longing for the deceased.
  • Problems accepting the death, with a persistent disbelief or emotional numbness.
  • Avoidance of reminders of the loved one, or conversely, an excessive focus on these reminders.
  • Feelings of bitterness or anger related to the loss.
  • A sense that life is meaningless without the deceased and a profound detachment from life.

If complex grief continues unchecked, it can lead to severe disruptions in daily functioning:

Disruption of Daily Routines: Struggling with day-to-day tasks and responsibilities, finding it hard to maintain normal routines.

Social Withdrawal: Isolating oneself from friends and family, and withdrawing from social activities that were once enjoyable.

Deeper Mental Health Issues: Experiencing profound depression, deep sadness, guilt, or self-blame, and persistent thoughts that one could have prevented the death.

Existential Struggles: Feelings that life isn’t worth living without the loved one or wishing to have died along with them, which can lead to suicidal thoughts or behaviors.

Research indicates that unexpected or traumatic losses, pre-existing mental health conditions like depression, and especially close or dependent relationships increase the risk of developing complex grief.

  • Mindfulness and Meditation: These practices help reduce stress hormones, promoting a calmer state of mind and aiding emotional regulation.
  • Breathing Techniques: Regulating the nervous system with these tools can help ease the body out of survival mode, allowing for a healthier processing of emotions.
  • Physical Activities: Gentle exercises like walking, yoga, or tai chi alleviate physical symptoms of stress and improve overall well-being.

Practicing compassion towards oneself and others can profoundly influence the grieving process. It helps alleviate pain and fosters a nurturing environment for healing. This practice can be transformative, not only for the person offering compassion but also for those around them, subtly affecting their physiological states.

Mourning rituals vary across cultures but serve a universal purpose: they allow us to process and honor our grief. These traditions can provide a framework for expressing grief and rebuilding life after loss.

Grief is a powerful, all-encompassing experience that reshapes our existence.
