My journey to motherhood was marked by a tumultuous battle with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), a condition that plunged me into the depths of physical and emotional turmoil.

Day in and day out, I was besieged by crippling nausea and vomiting. I watched the numbers on the scale fall, even as the life within me grew. Each day was a battle against the unrelenting wave of sickness, a test of endurance I never knew I had.

Hospital corridors and sterile rooms became my second home, as I sought any relief from the constant nausea. IV drips, medications, and the compassionate eyes of my healthcare providers became part of my routine. Despite their efforts, I often felt shrouded in a veil of invisibility, my suffering unseen beyond the walls of my home and the hospital.

The arrival of my children was a moment of unparalleled joy, but it was also the beginning of a profound reckoning. The physical and emotional depletion I felt was palpable. The vitality I once took for granted had been sapped away, leaving me a shell of my former self.

In the quiet moments of early motherhood, I confronted the reality of my state. Decades have passed since my dance with hyperemesis gravidarum, but the lessons it taught me remain. I’ve learned that self-compassion is not a luxury but a necessity, especially in the demanding journey of motherhood. It’s about giving yourself grace in moments of weakness and celebrating your strength in moments of triumph.

Self-awareness has been my compass, guiding me through the ebbs and flows of life. It’s a gentle reminder to tread softly, to cherish the moments of calm, and to face the storms with a heart full of courage and a spirit unwavering.

My journey through hyperemesis gravidarum was a voyage into the unknown, a test of resilience, and a lesson in the profound interconnection of our physical, mental, and emotional health. It was an experience that unveiled the silent struggles of motherhood, the strength in shared stories, and the power of self-compassion.
